Did anyone ever watch the Mystery Science Theater 3000 show? You know, the one where the guy and the two robots make fun of cheesy old B-movies?

Well, those guys moved onto mainstream films and their commentaries are extremely entertaining. They call it "Rifftrax" (visit the website!) and they actually made Twilight bearable! Not just bearable, but funny! And not in an unintentional way.

I couldn't find a best-of video of it on Youtube, but their Rifftrax of the newest Star Trek movie is also fantastic! Check it out if you can.

I really wish I had computer skills. Or Photoshop. I wish I had that. Grr.

Maybe someone can point me in the direction of a tutorial? I'm looking to make a header for my journal, using one particular photo. LJ doesn't provide NICE layouts, and I'm sick of it. I want to make my own! And this website isn't particularly helpful in that aspect.

Is it possible to put a photo and some text up there without Photoshop?

Movies I've seen in the last few months, but haven't remembered to mention:

- Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
Really funny! Written by the guys who did Clone High, one of my all-time favourite cartoons. With Bill Hader! HADER! He can do no wrong.

- Bright Star
So beautiful! Achingly so. About the poet John Keats and the woman, Fanny, he loved. More about Fanny, which was interesting. One of the most romantic movies I've seen, quite lovely. I felt emotionally wrecked afterwards.

- 500 Days of Summer
Love the pairing of Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel and the unconventional narrative. Nice to see a romantic comedy where they DON'T end up together. Because life's like that. Cute and also good soundtrack!

- Away We Go
Just watched this on DVD tonight. How fucking SWEET, wow! Loved the story and the music and Maya Rudolph and John Krasinskaaaaay were so lovely together. I had a little tear of happiness at the end.

I feel like I'm missing some, but I'm tired and the brain's not up to speed tonight.

Oh! I saw Kings of Leon in concert like ... 3 weeks ago? Never got around to writing about it but it was a great show! Pretty by-the-numbers, (probably because it was their 129,962,550th show) but they sounded great and lead singer Caleb was cute and very gracious and charming. I definitely had a good time.

I can think of no more... bedtime!

So, my cell phone fell out of my pocket last night and then stayed on the ground in front of my apartment for an hour and a half in the rain. I thought for sure it was dead but I tried that old "bowl of rice" trick AND IT ACTUALLY WORKED. You know the one... pop the battery out then cover both that and the phone in dry rice overnight. Crazy that it works.

In follow-up to my Mighty Boosh obsession, I moved onto Never Mind the Buzzcocks (with Simon Amstell as host) which I quickly devoured in a few days. So sad he's not hosting anymore! But I love Noel Fielding as a regular part of the new series now.

Then I discovered The IT Crowd, which I LOVE! Great writing and a great cast. Already went through all three series (why must there only be 6 episodes each time??).

I LOVE BRITISH COMEDY SO DAMN MUCH. So much, in fact, that I am losing what already-little interest I had in American shows... Uh oh.

Any Tegan and Sara fans out there? Their new single "Hell" is fantastic, from their upcoming album which is released in a couple of weeks. Listen to it here! Love the fast-paced beat and the chorus is ridiculously catchy. "I KNOW YOU FEEL IT TOOOO..."

Wow, I haven't posted in a while. In the three weeks since my last, I've fallen in love The Mighty Boosh. Noel! Julian! A journey through time and space! I fell head-over-heels for them and then hated myself for not finding them earlier. They're hilarious and so effing charming together. I even downloaded their live show! I WANT A NEW SERIES.

Currently, I've even-more-obsessing over The Arctic Monkeys. Yes, I know, they've ALSO been around for several years, but for whatever reason, I just never really listened to them. Their new album "Humbug" really caught my attention; I really love it! Then I went backwards from there. And seriously, their first album really is as good as everyone said it was. "Still Take You Home" fucking kicks ass. Ooh! Then I found a torrent download of their 2007 Glastonbury set. SO. GOOD.

I think I've become jealous of England with their fantastic tv shows and comedians and musicians. I TOTALLY HAVE. Please make me an honourary Brit! Please!

Guess what's gonna be on my tv screen in half an hour?

So, this is my cat, Isis:

Fucking precious, am I right? My family's had her forever, I actually lost count how long... She's 13 or 14 years old I believe. Anyways, she's mellowed out A LOT in her older age which is quite nice because she used to be an unfriendly beyotch.

BUT OMG SHE IS STILL A CANNIBAL :( :( :(

I went downstairs in the basement to feed her and clean her litter and OMG I FOUND A DISMEMBERED MOUSE HEAD. ASDFGHJKL;'BJRKLGBRAWJKGBK the image is burned into my eyes! The freakiest part is that there was just the head and a little blood and that was it. SHE MUST'VE EATEN THE REST :(

UGH CATS. Even domesticated I understand many still have these wild impulses, but still. FREAKED ME OUT. I couldn't even imagine cleaning it up so I just covered with a towel and asked my dad to do the honours.

And that concludes my cat-tale.

In unrelated news, Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords is acting in this new movie by the guy who did Napolean Dynamite! Called "Gentleman Broncos", check out the trailer in ~HD~. I'm thinking it actually looks pretty funny and entertaining... but WHO AM I KIDDING I WILL SEE IT NO MATTER WHAT BECAUSE OMG JEMAINE.

So I'm watching the live concert feed of Lollapalooza!

Right now it's Snoop Dogg, which is... not interesting to me. Haha. It is amusing however, to see him get thousands and thousands of people to yell "FUCK THAT SHIT".

But up next is fucking Silversun Pickups and Portugal. The Man!! Both AMAZING bands that I'm currently digging quite a lot. I'm pleased that they're showing a live feed.

Also, I saw Half-Blood Prince tonight in ~IMAX 3D~. They don't happen to mention that it's only the first 20 minutes that are in the third dimension, but oh well. Fortunately I was tipped off to this fact before hand so I wasn't too disappointed. Still enjoyed myself, of course, it's HP!

IT WAS AMAZING. UH-MAY-ZING. AMAZING. That's basically all I have to say. I don't have the energy to wax poetic about how transcendent this band is, but I wish I did. Robin Pecknold has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard and it was give-me-chills great that night. And he was so humble and sweet about the enormous reception he got from the crowd. And he came outside the venue to talk to fans waiting around! There were already like 25 people there, so I didn't wait around, but I was at least 5 feet away from him! It was great, I got a thrill just from that alone. (Plus the other cutie guitarist Skye walked right by me when he was outside having a smoke! Guh.

I'm so happy I went! They are definitely the greatest live band I've ever seen. I can only hope they come back to Toronto soon. I'm uploading some videos to youtube right night, I'll post those later.

I found some great professonal shots from that night that I thought I'd share!

And a few of my own, not good, but still. My own.

I kind of just want to replay the memory of this night over and over again in my mind... So I think I shall.

Alright, so I've had some time since Harry Potter last night to sleep and think. And, THUS, here are my thoughts!

This is going to be kind of scattered, sorry. Just how my brain works!

All in all, a really good movie experience. It was super entertaining! I was never bored, because there were really no tedious filler/expository scenes like all the prior films seem to have.

Plus, it was actually really genuinely funny! It was definitely the funniest movie yet. Which is fantastic and makes sense, because the Half-Blood Prince was the funniest book in my opinion. In fact, it was possibly my favourite book in part because of that reason.

The funniest bits usually had Prof Slughorn in them, because wow Jim Broadbent is good! Love that man. Plus Ron and his love potion, well, of course, was quite amusing. And Harry, when he takes his Felix Felicis potion, that was brilliant! They really played that well. I wished there had been more to do with Potions and the Half Blood Prince's potions book, but I suppose they did enough with what amount of time they had.

It ends on quite a somber note of course, and the shift in tone is a little startling, but that was also the case with the book.

RUPERT. RUUUUUUPERT! I just can't love this boy enough. And he really didn't dissappoint me in this, at all. In fact, he was funnier and sweeter than I hoped for. Of course, my crush on him is blinding, so NATURALLY I'd love him no matter what, but I genuinely think he did very well in this. Honestly, I don't blame Lavender for going psycho-stalker on him haha! Boy is looking goooood.

I'm ambivalent towards Emma Watson because she is so not what I imagined Hermione to be and because she always gets the lines that Ron should, but I have to admit that her and Rupert have created something very sweet between Ron and Hermione. I loved their cute little moments, found them totally believable. I'm hopeful for a really satisfying romance in the last two films!

Harry and Ginny on the other hand... fell a little flat. Somewhat dissappointing, if I'm being honest. To be fair, they did the best with what they had... for whatever reason, the screenwriter (Steve Kloves) set them up in the cliché-iest of clichéd situations possible THAT NEVER EXISTED EVER IN THE BOOK. Ginny feeding Harry a bite of cake? Bending down to tie his shoelace? WHAT? It IS possible to flirt in a subtle way you know. It just felt forced and not particularly natural. Unfortunately, Bonnie Wright as Ginny just doesn't really do it for me. She was quite bland, really, not as feisty and snarky as she is supposed to be. Too bad.

So, yes, a great film. A faithful adaptation of the book? Absolutely not. There were quite a few changes and omissions made. Some scenes were completely new and not from the book, and I didn't recognize much dialogue lifted from the book. It's like... USE THE BOOK, OK? THAT SHIT IS GOOD. YOU DON'T NEED TO MAKE UP YOUR OWN. I know I know, it was all in trying to keep the film interesting, focused and exciting, so I understand (begrudgingly).

But there will definitely be many unhappy Harry Potter fans out there, that's for sure. In fact, I've already read a few cranky reviews on my f-list! HP fans don't waste any time haha.

Did I miss something? Of course, I could mention something about pretty much every character and scene! But that's overkill, I know. Though I'm sure some thought will pop up later that I will have to share.

I'd love to hear from my fellow HP lovers, so share your opinions please! :)

Off to see a midnight showing of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince! My friend and I are going 4 hours early to get a good spot in the theater. Weeds and True Blood are back! There was a draught there, where are my other tv favs had ended and THERE WAS NOTHING TO WATCH. But, yay, the summer television season has descended upon us! *cheers*

And wowzers, I really enjoyed both season openers!

Weeds was a week ago (new ep tonight!) so it's not as freash in my mind as True Blood but it really got into the swing of things very quickly. I'm very intrigued by Nancy's pregnancy and what's going to happen to her. I'm also intrigued by how the show has basically given up on the whole "Is she a good mom still?" theme... it's pretty clear that NO, she is failing at motherhood pretty bad. Her sons and family kinda hate her. Which makes her new pregnancy all the more tragic. I still managed to laugh a lot, mostly thanks to Andy and Doug.

All in all, I'm excited for this season!

And True Blood is just... ridiculously thrilling for me. It's sexy and violent and funny and creepy and I just love it.

In my real-life life, I'm missing my mother a lot because she is in South Africa right now for three month volunteering at an AIDS hospice near Johannesburg. I've tried to call but it's very hard to plan a time and sometimes my calling card doesn't work and even e-mailing isn't reliable because she doesn't have free access to internet. So, LONG STORY SHORT, my momma is very very far away from me right now and I miss her. She's very alone right now and I just wish I could be there with her. Love you Mama ♥

+ Saw Canadian rapper K-OS play last night... for free! He's doing all these free shows across the country, calling it the "Karma" tour.. pretty cool. Plus, he's a fantastic singer/rapper. It was such a good show! AND I bought one of his merch: a wicked cool red hoodie! Thusly:

+ Bought tickets to see motherfuckin FLEET FOXES in August!! I may cry, seriously. So looking forward to that day!

Thoughts:

+ STAR TREK!!! I know everyone and their mother saw it last weekend, but still. REALLY GOOD. I enjoyed it immensely. I may see it again soon! I really loved the cast.

+ SNL was great last weekend! I loved "Motherlover", not going to lie. Seriously, I know that The Lonely Island/Andy Samberg is pretty juvenile... but goddamn they make me laugh.

And not only that skit. The Barry Gibb talk show reunion sketch with Jimmy Fallon was genuinly really funny/

The whole thing was so enjoyable and fun. I loved how they handled hecklers and how they had literally nothing planned for in between the songs so they just talked. So cute.
